East Carolina University has been named the No. 1 "Best Bang for the Buck" among colleges and universities in the Southeast in a new report that ranks universities on outcomes and the degree of opportunity afforded students.

Beaufort County Community College will cease participation in the Federal Direct Student Loan Program effective July 1, 2015. As a result, BCCC will not originate any new student loans after that date.

It's a pleasure to announce that Jenna A. Robinson, currently director of outreach for the John W. Pope Center for Higher Education Policy, is about to become our new president. I am retiring, and my last day will be Friday, Feb. 13. I am joining the board of the Pope Center as vice-chairman.

Should prisoners have access to higher education while incarcerated? If so, should that access be funded by taxpayers? Those questions were raised after New York Governor Andrew Cuomo announced in February that he wanted to create a state-run college program for prison inmates.
